OK a little deviation from the normal post. This is Eric writing (in case you were wondering). One of my many passions is fly fishing. So if you are not into fishing, go ahead and skip this post. I love it. But just as many things in my life I tend to cycle on and off. (see
biking from a previous post). Right now, the fishin' is on!! I had the privilege last week to fish one of the premier spring creeks in this country called Black Earth Creek. It was absolutely beautiful. The river meandered through corn fields, cow pastures, woods. Crystal clear stream. I got there as 8:00 AM. As I settled into a part of the stream where a long riffle ended into a large deep pool, there were a pod of brown trout sipping small midges off the surface. As they quietly sipped their meal, their backs would skim the surface with their dorsal fins breaking the plane of water. HUGE 20 to 24" trout!!!! I fished my heart out for hours at these trout with everything in my flybox with no luck. I got skunked, but it was fun. As I was leaving, a fellow fisherman told me that late afternoon is a better time to fish. The big browns love grasshoppers. As as the afternoon sun warms up the surrounding fields and the winds pick up, hoppers land on the water in droves. He said the browns go crazy over this. I had to get home, but I will try this river again. In addition, in June there is a
big hex hatch which I will be back to try again. Until then, I have plans to go salmon and steelhead fishing in Milwaukee in a few weeks!!
